The Melaka Art & Performance Festival Returns to Melaka For the Sixth Time with a Bigger Line-Up

MELAKA, 17 NOVEMBER 2014 – The largest and only site-specific art and performance event on a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Melaka Art & Performance Festival (MAPFest) returns to Melaka for the sixth time from 21 to 23 November 2014 with over 65 artists from all over the world who will turn the city into a live canvas for their art which is free and accessible for all.

Andrew Ching, founder and producer of MAPFest said, “MAPFest connects people through a universal need and desire to create. The programmes will showcase the work of professional artists and performers, to encourage the life of the arts in Malaysia, Asia and internationally.”

The festival attracts tens of thousands of foreign and local festival-goers to the historical site for three days of international quality performances featuring dance, performing art, visual installation, film and music. In a short space of time since its inception in 2009, MAPFest has gained a high national and increasingly international profile, being recognised for its programme of exciting independent artists, collaborations and its use of alternative sites for performance.

MAPFest keeps it fresh with specialty components such as the Cerita Pendek (“Short Stories”) 1 and 2 that brings a short collection of dance, music and performance by various artists over two nights at the historical and iconic St Paul’s Hill. The festival closes with Eulogy For The Living, a large-scale performance, a spectacular and soulfull finale not to be missed.

One of the many highlights for this year is Malaysia Australia Raft Project (MARP). An improvised cross cultural collective masquerading as a collaboration. MARP began in 2012 with an authorised raft journey into an endangered Malaysian rainforest which curiously ended up on the Wimmera River in Southern Australia in 2013. MARP is a high visual, maroon meltdown of song, music, dance, cooking, sewing, drawing and painting.

MAPFest 2014 includes the MAPPING programme which involves all the festival artists, and this year there is a strong emphasis on collaboration and improvisation including new and challenging performance platforms. The performances showcase traditional arts alongside contemporary expressions with innovative uses of new technology.

This year, MAPFest 2014 showcases ‘Pontianak’, an international collaboration between Malaysian and Australian artists in a cross-disciplinary ensemble spoken word feature-length show which includes solo, duets, questioning ideas of national/cultural/religious boundaries told through revised Asian ghost stories, myth and folklore specifically about women.

The audience will also be able to witness a collection of short films such as Anon, Bye Bye Baby, New York, Minority Box and We Are World Change throughout the festival which are funny, entertaining and occasionally heartbreaking.

MAPFest 2014 is directed by Tony Yap in his capacity as Festival Creative Director. He was one of the principle performers with IRAA Theatre from 1989 to 1996, and has worked extensively in Australia and internationally, including the Agamemnon Festival, Colline Torinese in Italy and The Trojan Woman at the Vienna International Art Festival. As the founding Artistic Director of Mixed Company (now the Tony Yap Company) in 1993, he has made a commitment to the exploration and creation of an individual dance theatre language that is informed by psycho-physical research, Asian Shamanistic Trance Dance, Butoh, Voice and Visual Design.

MAPFest 2014 is produced by Arts & Performance Festival Melaka Sdn Bhd and is supported by E-Plus Entertainment Sdn Bhd, Mercatus Plus (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Badan Warisan Malaysia, the Australian High Commission, Tony Yap Company, the Embassy of Japan, the Kedutaan Besar Republik Indonesia, the Embassy of Ireland, the Royal Thai Embassy, the High Commission of New Zealand, the Embassy of Italy, the Embassy of Colombia, the Embassy of France, Alliance Français de Kuala Lumpur and Institut Français.
