Melaka Governor Launches The Sixth Melaka Art And Performance Festival
MELAKA, 21 NOVEMBER 2014 – The Melaka Art & Performance Festival (MAPFest), the largest and only site specific art and performance festival on a UNESCO World Heritage site, was officially launched today by Melaka Governor Tun Datuk Seri Utama Mohd Khalil Yaakob and MAPFest Royal Patron Tengku Datin Paduka Setia Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, at the historical St. Paul’s Hill.
65 artists from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, France, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan and New Zealand will be performing in the streets and St. Paul’s Hill where the asphalt will become their canvas for their art. The festival is free and accessible for all, and is expected to attract tens of thousands of tourists over the next two days.
The Governor was represented by Datuk Haji Ghazali bin Muhamad, Timbalan Exco Pelancongan, Pembangunan Pantai, Sungai & Pulau-Pulau Melaka.
“It is with great pride that we are able to host this event once again, building on the success of the past five years, and this year we are honoured to have Tengku Datin Paduka Setia Zatashah as our royal patron, which will ensure MAPFest continues to expand and grow in the coming years,” said Andrew Ching, Founder and Festival Director of MAPFest.
MAPFest is an innovative contemporary festival which features Cerita Pendik 1 and 2 that bring a short collection of dance, music and performances by various artists culminating in the Eulogy For The Living showcase directed by Tony Yap, the Festival Creative Director.
“MAPFest will also feature ‘Pontianak’, an international collaboration between Malaysian and Australian artists in a cross-disciplinary ensemble, in a spoken word feature-length show which includes solos, duets and the questioning ideas of national and cultural boundaries told through revised Asian ghost stories, myths and folklore specifically about women,” said Tony.
Tony was one of the principle performers with IRAA Theatre from 1989 to 1996, and has worked extensively in Australia and internationally, including the Agamemnon Festival, Colline Torinese in Italy and The Trojan Woman at the Vienna International Art Festival. As the founding Artistic Director of Mixed Company (now the Tony Yap Company) in 1993, he has made a commitment to the exploration and creation of an individual dance theatre language that is informed by Psycho-Physical Research, Asian Shamanistic Trance Dance, Butoh, Voice and Visual Design.
MAPFest is produced by Arts & Performance Festival Melaka Sdn Bhd and is supported by E-Plus Entertainment Sdn Bhd, Mercatus Plus, Badan Warisan Malaysia, the Australian High Commission, the Tony Yap Company, the Embassy of Japan, the Kedutaan Besar Republik Indonesia, the Embassy of Ireland, the Royal Thai Embassy, the High Commission of New Zealand, the Embassy of Italy, the Embassy of Colombia, the Embassy of France, Alliance Français de Kuala Lumpur and Institute Français.
