KUALA LUMPUR, 11 APRIL 2017 – David McKienzie, American Olympic volleyball player and husband to Malaysia’s sweetheart, Lana Nordin, will take on the shores of Pantai Cenang in the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour – Malaysia Open coming Saturday and Sunday, 15 and 16 April 2017. The former Olympian will partner with 27-year-old Andrew Dentler as the wildcard team in the men’s game.
Born on 5 July 1979, the 37-year-old indoor volleyball player joined the U.S. National Team in 2001. In 2003, he helped the team in winning the NORCECA Zone Championships. He was an alternate for the 2004 Summer Olympics team. In 2005, McKienzie led the U.S. team with 3.28 kills per set and secured the gold medal at the America’s Cup, the NORCECA Continental Championship and the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup. The following season, he had 306 kills to rank second on the team. In 2012, he helped the team in winning a silver medal at the FIVB World League and scored 21 points at the Summer Olympics the same year.
“This will be my first international game on Malaysia ground. I am very excited and looking forward to competing with my competitors from the list of teams announced by FIVB,” said McKienzie. When asked about his opinion and transition from indoor volleyball to beach volleyball, he mentioned that “both sports might sound similar, but each has its challenges. I will have to adapt to a new set of settings, rules, surroundings and skills. I believe that my experience, knowledge and training will be advantageous for the team during the games.”
Dentler, the fifth-seeded in the 2015 FIVB Beach Volleyball Continental Tour – Florida Open and the third-seeded in the 2016 California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) Zuma Beach Tournament, will partner McKienzie for the first time this season. This will be their second partnership after the NORCECA Playoffs #3 in May 2016.
32 teams from Australia, Austria, Cuba, Czech Republic, Spain, Estonia, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Romania, South Africa, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Switzerland and the United States of America are in the list released by FIVB. A total of USD20,000 (approximately RM89,000) in prize money will be given away for the double-gendered tournament.
Malaysia will host the World Tour 1-Star (WT1) tournament following the season opener in Shepparton, Australia. After Langkawi, the season will proceed to Pacific Harbour in Fiji, Agadir in Morocco, Daegu and Ulsan in South Korea for the 2017 season.
